Scrambling
Scrambling is one of the core activities that we engage in, as it allows us to explore the mountains in a completely different way to hillwalking. Scrambling covers the ground found in the progression between walking and climbing.

One of the most common activities we get up to on trips is scrambling. For those who are unfamiliar, this is ascending steeper terrain typically using your hands as one would when climbing. Almost all trips have the option to go scrambling, and there are often many to choose from, ranging from grade 1 (a little more involved than walking, although often more exposed) to grade 3s (significant climbing and exposure is involved). This allows you to experience the mountains in a different way to how you would if you were walking, as it often leads to ridges, cliffs and quieter regions of the hills.
Please be prepared to bring everything you would as if you were walking, but in addition you are required to bring a helmet (can be provided by the club but you are welcome to bring your own), and for grade 2 and above harnesses may be recommended or required. You might like to bring additional clothes compared to walking, as depending on the group you should expect to move slower due to the nature of the activity, however this usually (weather depending) allows you to enjoy the views and have a chat with your fellow members.
We usually require you to join an easier grade first, but if you have done appropriate scrambling and/or climbing previously, you are more than welcome to join any group, depending on what the walk leader says. Please have a discussion with the relevant individuals on the Friday evening if you are interested. Group sizes are limited to the ratio 1:6, 1:4 and 1:2 for grade 1, 2 and 3+.
To improve your confidence scrambling, you might like to go climbing with us in the sports center. For more information about this, see the club climb page.
